Subsidized Vehicle Program Pilot – Candidate Canvass

Dear PBA Officers,

I am looking for candidates for a potential subsidized vehicle pilot. Since we are working on firming up details, you would have the option to decline prior to implementation, should the final pilot specifications not meet your liking. I would not want anyone to go out and buy a vehicle for this, since a pilot can be ended at any time. Vehicles Division already uses, like Equinoxes and Durango’s, are obvious winners for a pilot program, but your Honda Pilot or Subaru Legacy would probably be fine as well.

Subject to change, the pilot will look something like this:

1. Set amount of dollars per month (Hawaii pays 562).
2. Fuel subsidy (likely via your division fuel card), based on miles driven.
3. You own the vehicle, which has been purchased by you, and is titled and registered to you. Family members can drive it but usually limited because you & vehicle are still on-call.
4. You are responsible for all maintenance, including your own tires.
5. On-duty crash: Division covers.
6. Off-duty crash: Your personal insurance covers. (PBA is working with providers who will be aware this is used as a police vehicle at times).
7. Entering the program, AMI installs lights/radio. We are looking to minimize damage to the vehicle, but at the moment, no leases for this reason.
8. Exiting the program AMI removes lights/radio.
9. The vehicle should be within 8 years old and have reasonable mileage when entering the program.

Just so we are clear, any final program that comes out of this will be an optional program.

If you are interested, or have further questions, let me know.

Fraternally,
Dan
