Governor Signs PBA’s FOIL Protection Legislation Into Law

As our Second Vice President and Legislative Director, Jason Sheridan, recently reported, the NYSTPBA was able to secure the enactment of legislation that will require state agencies to develop policies ensuring that their employees receive notice whenever their disciplinary records are the subject of a freedom of information law (“FOIL”) request (Chapter 302 of the Laws of 2024).  While the Division currently provides some notice to our members, the agency was not required to do so.  Without this enactment, a change in policy could have occurred at the whim of the administration.  And despite having to deal with a state legislature that is all too often hostile to New York’s law enforcement officers, the NYSTPBA nevertheless remained steadfast in our efforts and prevailed in securing these new protections. Although other law enforcement groups are quickly attempting to take credit for this victory, it was the work of our team and our team alone that resulted in this success.
