Honoring Sperr
By Erin Billups
Last month, New York State Trooper Andy Sperr was killed in the line of duty.
Now, several agencies and his family are honoring him in at least two special ways.
The State Police Barracks in Horseheads is working with Chemung County and the town of Big Flats to turn land by Lowe Road and Route 17 into a memorial park in Sperr’s honor.
The site is where Sperr was shot and killed, allegedly by a man who had just robbed a nearby bank.
"Andy just kind of outshined everybody with his work ethic, his attitude, the way he treated people. And this is just something we want to do for him to honor him and the sacrifice he made for the community," said Sgt. Michael Hess, Horseheads Station Commander.
Sperr’s parents have set up a scholarship fund in his memory at his former school in Greece, donations can be sent to:
Trooper Andrew J. Sperr Memorial Scholarship Fund
C/o St. Lawrence School
