An estimated 5,000 law enforcement officers attended the funeral of New York State Trooper Joseph Longobardo on Sept. 11, as a way to honor this fallen hero. Along with about 2,000 New York State Troopers, Troopers from New Jersey, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Florida, Minnesota, and California, and municipal police officers from across the state, paid tribute to Trooper Longobardo.
Trooper Longobardo and Trooper Donald Baker Jr. were shot on Aug. 31, believed to be by escaped convict Ralph Phillips. Trooper Longobardo died from his injuries on Sept. 3, and Trooper Baker remains hospitalized.
The intense search for Ralph Phillips thankfully came to an end on Sept. 8, when law enforcement officers cornered him in a wooded area and he surrendered without incident.
The State Troopers PBA thanks everyone for their support during this time. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with Trooper Longobardo’s family, as well as Trooper Baker and his family as he remains hospitalized.
