PBA endorses Gov. George E. Pataki

The Police Benevolent Association of the New York State Troopers, Inc. is proud to announce its endorsement of Gov. George E. Pataki in the 2002 gubernatorial election.

A crusader for criminal justice, an advocate for taxpayers and an effective leader during times of crisis, Pataki has proven he is the best and most experienced candidate for New York state’s highest elected office.

“It is important to stress that we support Gov. Pataki not only as law enforcement officers but also as labor union members, taxpayers, consumers, and middle income family members with young children and elderly parents,” said PBA President Daniel M. De Federicis.

During his years of public service as governor, Pataki has shown his support of New York State Troopers and public safety in general by signing into law legislation that is tough on crime.

The Governor’s innovative criminal justice programs have been designed to ensure the safety of the public as well as the safety of the Troopers entrusted with serving and protecting the public. The Warrant Return Assistance Program, for example, has given Troopers in the Capital Region the tools to apprehend criminals with outstanding warrants from New York City and return them to the appropriate jurisdiction to face their charges.

Across the state, citizens have benefited greatly from the Governor’s visionary direction of the New York State Police. Residents in upstate cities such as Buffalo, Schenectady and Newburgh have experienced the additional protection of Troopers temporarily assigned to the area to help municipal police combat waves of crime. Downstate residents saw Troopers working side by side with officers from the New York City Police Department following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11.

During that time of devastation and emotional distress, the Governor gave New Yorkers hope through his outstanding leadership. Without hesitation Pataki coordinated the efforts of state agencies in a response that was both reactive and proactive, distributing resources as needed and developing plans to safeguard life and property against possible attacks in the future.

This is the first endorsement the PBA has made in a gubernatorial race in 20 years, further demonstrating the PBA’s confidence in Pataki’s abilities.

The membership of the PBA has grown to more than 5,900, which includes uniformed members of the New York State Police from the rank of Trooper through the rank of Major as well as retired members of the State Police.”
