New York State Trooper Sean M. Brown is recovering from a gunshot wound at an Elmira hospital, while law enforcement agencies are now looking for an escaped prisoner as a “person of interest” in the shooting.

Brown was on patrol with his partner about 1 a.m. Saturday in Chemung County when the two Troopers followed a dark green Mustang that they believed to be suspicious. The Mustang slowed to a stop without the Troopers having to activate their emergency lights. As the Troopers approached the car, the driver opened fire, striking Brown in an area of his side not protected by a bulletproof vest. The Mustang sped off, and Brown’s partner, Trooper Donald Will, immediately brought him to a hospital emergency room.

The Mustang was discovered later Saturday morning abandoned in a residential neighborhood, and a pickup truck nearby was also discovered stolen. Law enforcement officers are now looking for a 1992 Chevrolet pickup with New York license plates CYL5410, although those plates may have been changed by now.

Just three months ago, Trooper Andrew J. Sperr was shot and killed during a traffic stop about 20 miles away from this latest shooting incident.
