This afternoon, a Chemung County jury found Anthony Horton guilty of murdering New York State Trooper Andrew J. Sperr on March 1 following a traffic stop in the town of Big Flats.

The State Troopers PBA thanks the jury for their understanding of the case and for their outstanding service, and we would also like to thank the public for their support during the trial. The PBA continues to send its support to the family and fellow Troopers who worked with Trooper Sperr.

The jury found Horton guilty on all counts: aggravated murder, first-degree murder, second-degree murder, first-degree robbery, third-degree robbery, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon

Horton was convicted in the murder of Trooper Sperr, the timeline of which is as follows: Trooper Sperr stopped a pickup truck Horton was a passenger in along Lowe Road. At the time, Trooper Sperr did not know that Horton and the driver, Bryan Adams, had just been involved in a bank robbery just minutes before. As Trooper Sperr approached the vehicle, Horton fired a .357 Magnum revolver at Trooper Sperr several times. Despite being hit, Trooper Sperr was able to return fire and wound both Horton and Adams. Trooper Sperr died from his injuries.

Two accomplices were also charged in connection with the murder.
