It is with great sadness that the State Troopers PBA mourns the loss of one of our own, Trooper Andrew J. Sperr, who was shot and killed in the line of duty Wednesday. Trooper Sperr gave his life in the name of serving and protecting the public, and he died a hero.

Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Trooper Sperr. As members of the State Police family, the Sperr family will never be alone.

Trooper Sperr dedicated his life to making New York state a safer place. During his 10-year career with the State Police, he was involved in some high-profile cases, including helping discover record-breaking amounts of materials and equipment used in methamphetamine labs in Chemung County in 2004; helping apprehend two convicted murderers who escaped from the Elmira Correctional Facility in 2003; and apprehending a wanted fugitive in two states while working in Orange County in 1997.

This terrible, tragic death reminds us all just how dangerous the job of a New York State Trooper is, and just how unpredictable any day can be in law enforcement.
