There is never a ‘routine’ day in the life of a New York State Trooper. Troopers are well trained in all aspects of law enforcement, but they face great danger each and every day. Trooper Albert Miano of Troop K narrowly escaped injury or even death when a vehicle sideswiped his patrol car while he was writing a ticket, parked along the Taconic State Parkway. The alleged driver of the other vehicle was later arrested and charged with drunken driving.
Through a grant, the International Association of Chiefs of Police is studying accidents involving police during traffic stops. Statistics provided by the police group and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show the third-leading cause of death for on-duty police officers is being struck by a vehicle.
