Today’s sentencing in Fulton City Court of Ronald McCarthy, who attempted to kill a New York State Trooper, demonstrates the violence that our dedicated law enforcement officers face each and every day they put on their uniforms.

The June 23, 2007 incident in which Ronald McCarthy fought with and pointed a gun at the head of State Police Sgt. Joseph Domagola was a tragedy narrowly averted. For New York State Troopers and law enforcement officers across the country, no work day is ever “routine.”

The sentence imposed on Ronald McCarthy sends a message that the criminal justice system, and society as a whole, will not tolerate these atrocious acts of violence against law enforcement officers.

The PBA applauds the determination and courage of Sgt. Domagola in not only defending himself during the vicious attack by Ronald McCarthy, but also for his testimony during all phases of the court proceedings against this heinous criminal. We are thankful Sgt. Domagola is alive and able to continue to serve and protect the public.

The PBA would like to thank Oswego County District Attorney Donald Dodd for his unwavering support of Sgt. Domagola throughout this case, and for his tough stance on heinous criminals such as Ronald McCarthy.

The PBA also appreciates the support shown to Sgt. Domagola today by fellow Troopers, Investigators, and other members of law enforcement and public safety agencies who attended today’s sentencing.
