As a member of the New York Police Officers Memorial Advisory Committee, I recently attended a meeting to discuss the future expansion of the Memorial. Unfortunately, because of 9/11 related deaths caused by sickness, space on the Memorial has been dwindling quickly. There will be 27 names added this year, 14 of which are 9/11 related, leaving only 53 spaces available. As such, as a result of this meeting, a plan has been put in place in conjunction with the Advisory Committee, NYS DCJS and OGS. A plan was agreed upon allowing for additional granite panels to be constructed allowing for an additional 630 names and another 25 years of usability. This year’s ceremony will be on May 5, 2015 at 1 p.m. at the Memorial site on the Empire State Plaza, and Trooper Chris Skinner’s name will be etched upon the black granite wall of the Memorial.
Additional information will be posted as it becomes available on the Police Officer Memorial pages of the DCJS website at http://www.criminaljustice.ny.gov/ops/pomc/index.htm
